Eric Watson Perfects the Art of Traditional Custom Hat Making

north scottsdale lifestyle magazine
Article by Kory Kilmer  |  North Scottsdale Lifestyle Magazine  |  January 26, 2017 When Indiana Jones first hit movie theaters back in 1981, he introduced archeology to a generation that has now become leaders in the field. For a kid in Ohio, however, he found his inspiration not just in the adventures of Dr. Jones, but also in his fedora, and with that, crafted a one-of-a-kind career in which he has few peers. “When I was twelve years old I wanted a good Indiana Jones hat,” says Eric Watson, owner and hat maker at Watson’s Hat Shop in Cave Creek. “I couldn’t afford a nice one, so I always ended up with a cheap hat, which pretty quickly lost its shape or just fell apart,...

Article from Western Horse Review  |  January/February 2017   Eric Watson has had a hat obsession since he was a teenager, and today, in his mid-30’s his lifelong study and practice of the art of making a felt hat is paying off as he has to his credit such big name clients as Justin Timberlake and Kenny Chesney. Almost everything at Watson’s Hat Shop in Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek is antique, acquired from scouring the planet for moulds, blocks and his 1930’s-era sewing machine. He puts the same care and respect master hatters of the Old West did into his craft. His felt hats are made from the finest blends of pure beaver, European hare, and Cuenca from Ecuador for the hand woven straw...

Watson’s Hat Shop teams up with Ray Villafane and the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden

carefree enchanted pumpkin garden scarecrow with Watson's cowboy hat
New this year, made exclusively for the Town of Carefree’s Enchanted Pumpkin Garden, are one-of-a-kind, life-size Scarecrows imagined and created by Ray Villafane and his team of artists.  For this special exhibit, Watson's Hat Shop was asked to supply one of the "props" for the cowboy scarecrow -- a custom made cowboy hat, of course! Hand crafted with dried twigs, shrubs and old tree materials from the desert, each scarecrow is an original and no two are the same. As Ray and his team work through the creative process, each Scarecrow gradually develops a personality and has their own story to tell visitors in the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden. Watson's Hat shop is honored to be a part of this unique and artistic attraction.
